For many locals and summer guests, it is a yearly ritual to trek this well-traveled hiking trail from Aspen's West Maroon Pass to Crested Butte. For some, it is simply to check it off the list of summer hikes that must be accomplished before the first snows arrive. Others go for the spectacular wildflowers that seem to blanket the meadows with their cheery color. Many find it to be uplifting and get an empowering sense of accomplishment. If you have not done it, I recommend you put it on your bucket list and start planning now. Here are the essentials to know for this trek.
-
Parking at the trailhead is prohibited between 8 am - 5 pm so get there early, parking is $5, and $10 for overnight
-
If you get there after 8 am, there is a Bus at Aspen Highlands that will get you to the trailhead for $8
-
Bring rain gear and pack light but smart, hiking poles can be helpful if you are not an avid hiker
-
The hike is approximately 11 miles and will topple out at 12,500 with incredible vistas in all directions
-
Two options at the top: return the way you came or head towards Crested Butte
-
You will need to schedule a shuttle through Dolly's Mountain Shuttle to pick you up at the trailhead in Crested Butte
-
Book your accommodations early as many weekends get busy
-
The final decision will you hike back the following day or you chose a shuttle back to Aspen
