For nine years, the answer to "where are we eating Thursday?" in Basalt tilted the same direction: downtown, porch overlooking the Roaring Fork, roasted chicken at Free Range Kitchen. The building has not moved. The porch is still there. The kitchen is now Angelo Elia's.
That single change would be enough to reset a resident's rotation. It is not the only one. Between the sale of Free Range, the completion of the Midland Residences block in May, a Bavarian room settling into Willits, and a new Chinese kitchen quietly opening downtown, the town's dining geography is doing something it rarely does: shifting on both ends of Highway 82 at once.
The thesis, stated plainly
Downtown Basalt spent the last decade ceding evening energy to Willits. In 2026, that direction reverses. The corner of Midland Avenue and Two Rivers Road is regaining the pull it used to have, and the Willits axis is becoming the reliable weekday base rather than the destination-of-the-week. If you already live here, your dinner rotation is going to shorten in one direction and lengthen in the other.
What changed at 22864 Two Rivers Road
Robin and Steve Humble sold Free Range Kitchen to Chef Angelo Elia in late 2025 after operating the restaurant since December 2016.
